Obituary for Leo F. Salvagni

Leo F. Salvagni
Leo F. Salvagni, 93, North Greenbush, surrounded by family, passed peacefully into eternal life on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Born on October 10, 1924, Leo attended St. John’s Academy until enlisting into the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served as a B-24 tail gunner and was an amateur boxer during World War II.

After his discharge from the Navy, Leo began his apprenticeship with the Sheet Metal Workers International Local 83 until he retired from the Norton Company in 1987. An avid outdoorsman and skilled woodworker, Leo spent many days hunting, fishing, and building things in his shop. Leo was a lifetime communicant of St. John’s Parish and member of the VFW and American Legion Gerald O’Neil Post #1683.

He is survived by his wife, Romana, of nearly 70 years, his son Frank Salvagni (Cathy), his daughter Linda Herbert, grandsons Jim Herbert and Jason Herbert (Kristine), and great-granddaughters Zoe and Francesca.

The family would especially like to thank the staff of Van Rensselaer Manor A-1 for their loving care over the past four years.

Family and friends are invited to call at the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home at 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer, NY, on Friday, June 22nd, between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 pm. A mass of Christian burial will celebrate Leo’s life at St. John’s Church, Herrick Street, Rensselaer, NY, on Saturday, June 23rd, at 9 am. Interment will follow the mass at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rensselaer, NY.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Leo’s memory to: Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204 www.mohawkhumane.com
